INTRODUCTION
The outreach program consists of a series of workshops created to bring artists and scientists together with the intention to foster collaborative learning. Participants have the opportunity to meet renowned artists and scientists from around the world and to explore the diverse practices in the area of bio-art, motivating and fostering natural creativity and sense for innovation.
The 2015 Bio Art workshops offer participants the atmosphere of an art studio that has the character of a science laboratory that evoke the cultural spirit of citizen science - a “do it yourself” participatory method to get everyone involved in research. Workshops are all hands on and resolve around the idea o providing unique activities focusing on art and natural sciences, especially biology.
All of the 2015 Bio Art Workshops are open to students, artists, designers, scientists of all ages, and to anyone who is interested to know where art and science meet. No background knowledge or special skills are required.
WORKSHOP 1
Title: Infective Textiles
Instructor: Anna Dumitriu
Date: Saturday 7 November 2015
Time: 10 am to 3pm
Location: Gwacheon National Science Museum
Workshop Description
In this workshop participants will learn from the Bio Artist, Anna Dumitriu’s how the world of clinical microbiology and biomedicine can have a role in creating artwork. She will guide participants through accessible DIY (do-it-yourself) microbiology techniques and explain how to work safely with bacteria as a creative medium. Dumitriu will share her experiences, stories and wide knowledge of microbiology from the history of the field to the latest cutting edge techniques such as whole genome sequencing creating an exciting, fun and memorable day.
Workshop Leader Biography
Anna Dumitiru (GBR)
Anna Dumitriu’s work is at the forefront of art and science collaborative practice, with focusing on microbiology and healthcare. Her installations, interventions and performances use a range of biological, digital, and traditional media including live bacteria, robotics, and textiles. Her work has been shown at The Picasso Museum (Barcelona), The Science Gallery (Dublin), The Museum of Contemporary Art (Taipei), and The Victoria & Albert Museum (London), and is held in several major collections, including the Science Museum (London) and Eden Project (Cornwall, UK). She is Artist in Residence on the Modernising Medical Microbiology Project at The University of Oxford.
WORKSHOP 2
Title: Art to and from Biology
Instructor: Jong Wook Hong
Date: Sunday 8 November 2015
Time: 10 am to 3pm
Location: Gwacheon National Science Museum

Date: Sunday 8 November 2015
Time: 10 am to 3pm
Location: Gwacheon National Science Museum
Workshop Description
Through state-of-the-art technology we are able to witness the beauty of biological processes. Using micro-bio-chip as a basis for building an adjustable micro-hydrodynamic system to observe the flow of small volume of fluids (nanoliter or picoliter) using different colored paints in a micro-channel implementation. The workshop makes it possible to observe the beautiful change of the fluid varies in real time using a microscope and lets people directly experience very modern biotechnology and understand how such things as micro-detectors, micro-reactors that are common to biotechnology research function.

Workshop Leader Biography
Jong Wook Hong (KOR)
The Artist Jong Wook Hong has a very unusual history. Engineer who enjoys listening to Bruckner and Mahler, he has been beyond the field of fusion research and borders. Currently he is a Bio-Nano Engineering professor at Hanyang University. He worked as a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Auburn University in United States and also served as a visiting professor at Seoul National University College of Pharmacy. He has a great interest in biochip design / production with the use of semiconductor manufacturing techniques and future medical research concerning this.
WORKSHOP 3
Title: “Preserving Smells of Memories”
Instructor: Catherine Young (PHP)
Date: Saturday 14 November & 15 November 2015
Time: 10am to 3pm
Location: Gwacheon National Science Museum
Workshop Description
Can you bottle your memories? In this perfumery workshop, participants will hike a mountain and collect fallen leaves and flowers, drops of rainwater, and other traces of their journey. Catherine Young will illuminate the mystery of olfaction and the art and science of perfumery with short talks on the molecular biology of smell and memory and the basics of perfumery. In a laboratory setting, the collected specimens will be sorted, labeled, and discussed for their scent, and distillation and perfumery techniques will be learned to preserve these smells—the participants' memories of their earlier journey. The final outcomes are participant-created perfumes and stored for use in bottles.
